At almost every place on this list, the most flattering light is one to two hours after sunrise or before sunset โ not just for aesthetics, but because it's also simply less crowded. If your schedule has flexibility, worth planning around this instead of around the convenience of sleeping in.
Respect for temples while taking photos
Temples are active places of worship and not just a backdrop for pictures. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, remove your shoes where asked, and do not stand above a Buddha statue or turn your back to it in a photo. Do not climb on statues. Drones: check the current rules
Flying a drone in Thailand is subject to rules and sometimes also to registration or permits, and at some sites it is prohibited, especially near temples, airports and crowded places. The rules change, so check the current rules with the official authorities before bringing a drone on your trip. If you are not sure, it is better to skip it and shoot from the ground. Also respect the privacy of other people around you.
Historic sites and soft light
Ancient sites in northern and central Thailand offer lovely pictures of stones, ruins and old trees. The soft light of morning and late in the day flatters them, and there is usually less of a crowd too. Plan your visit according to the season and the heat, and always check current opening hours before you set out. Markets and streets are full of color, but before photographing people, ask permission with a smile. Avoid photographing children without their parents' approval, and respect a refusal. If you bought something from the stall, it is easier to ask for a picture. At the beach, protect your camera from sand and water, and keep valuable gear safe. Golden hour and preparing your gear
The soft light of early morning and the late afternoon flatters almost any landscape. Arrive early, and check the weather forecast and current opening hours. In the heat and humidity it is worth protecting your camera and phone in a sealed bag, and bringing a power bank and a spare memory card. A small towel for wiping a lens helps a lot. Do not miss the moment because of failed gear, and plan your day around the light.
Shooting without disturbing others
Popular places develop lines for a photo. Be patient, do not block paths and do not use a selfie stick in crowded places. Respect people who are praying, and do not stand in their way.
