Beaches by Coast: West and East
On the west coast, in Phuket and Krabi, there are wide beaches such as Kata, Karon, Kamala and Nai Harn in Phuket, and Railay and Phra Nang beach in Krabi. On the eastern side, in the Gulf, the beaches of Chaweng and Lamai on Koh Samui are well known, as are the quieter beaches on Koh Phangan. Islands With Special Beaches
On Koh Lipe the water is clear and the sand white, and on Koh Lanta the beaches are long and relatively quiet. On Koh Chang and Koh Samet there are pleasant beaches closer to Bangkok. Maya Bay on Phi Phi is very well known, but access to it is subject to restrictions and seasonal closures to protect nature, so check before you plan. Make sure to check warning flags: a red flag means don't enter the water, and currents in the rainy season can be strong even on beaches that look calm. In some seasons there are jellyfish, so ask locals or hotel staff. When snorkeling, don't touch the coral, and keep a distance from wildlife. Don't leave valuables on the sand unattended.
How to Choose a Beach by Trip Type
For families with young children, a beach with a gentle entry and near services is better. For couples, a small, quiet beach with fewer passersby. For young travelers, a beach with nightlife nearby. When to Go to the Beach
West-coast beaches are especially pleasant in the dry season, roughly November to April, while the Gulf sometimes offers good conditions in summer too. Those arriving in the rainy season can check the east coast. Details in the seasons guide and on the Thailand by month page.
Small Gear That Makes a Difference at the Beach
Bring a reef-friendly sunscreen, a hat and good sunglasses, because the tropical sun is strong even on cloudy days. Water shoes help on rocky beaches, and a personal snorkel mask is more comfortable and hygienic than a rented one. A waterproof bag protects your phone and wallet. And if you stay for sunset, check in advance how you'll get back to your hotel.
