Is Hua Hin Right for You? An Honest Guide to Bangkok's Beach Town
An easy beach town, but not for everyone
Hua Hin is one of Thailand's older beach towns and sits close to Bangkok, roughly three hours by road. Many Thais know it as a short getaway, so it has comfortable infrastructure, good restaurants and a relaxed feel.
It is not a tropical island and not a party destination. If you expect crystal-clear water you may be disappointed. If you want a convenient base, a long beach and good food, you can enjoy it a lot. More on how beaches compare in our best beaches guide.
The beach, the night market and seafood
The beach is long and sandy, and the water is usually less clear than on the islands. You can stroll, swim and relax, and even see horse riding on the sand. On weekends and holidays it fills with visitors from Bangkok, so midweek is better.
In the evening, stop by the night market for snacks, souvenirs and fish dishes. Pick busy stalls and check freshness. The historic railway station is also a pretty photo stop. As for golf, there are several courses nearby for those who love it, but it is outside the scope of this guide.
Who it suits, and who it does not
Hua Hin suits families with children, older travellers and anyone who wants a few calm days before or after a trip. The infrastructure is comfortable and walking is relatively easy. Read more about traveling with kids and senior travellers.
It suits less well young people seeking parties, divers and anyone who wants a remote island. If that is you, consider another destination rather than compromising.
Getting there and where to stay
From Bangkok you can come by train, bus, minivan, taxi or rental car, and it usually takes about three hours depending on traffic. If you are landing at the airport, plan the onward trip with the airport to city guide.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Hua Hin, here are some options by location and budget. Usually it is best to stay near the beach or the market if you prefer to walk.
