Kanchanaburi: History, Trains and Waterfalls, and How Many Days

3 min readFrom the THAI TROPIC blog

Why Kanchanaburi deserves a day or two

Kanchanaburi is a rare place: heavy World War II history, and beside it a river, landscapes and waterfalls. It lies west of Bangkok, roughly two to three hours by road.

This is not a party destination. It is for people who want to understand something and breathe after the city. For general planning from Bangkok, see also day trips from Bangkok.

The Bridge over the River Kwai and the Death Railway

During World War II the Japanese army built a railway between Thailand and Burma, using prisoners of war and many Asian laborers. Many thousands died from hard labor, disease and hunger, which is why the line is called the Death Railway. The bridge over the River Kwai is also known from the film, but the film does not reflect the history accurately.

Important places to visit include the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and museums such as the JEATH War Museum and the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre. Come in modest clothing, quietly and with respect.

A train ride along the river

You can ride a stretch of the historic railway, including a crossing over a wooden viaduct built along a cliff above the river. It combines beautiful scenery with a sense of history. Check schedules ahead of time, as they depend on the season.

Even if you do not ride, it is worth watching the river, walking on the bridge and sitting in a cafe. Give yourself time, and do not rush.

Nature and the Erawan waterfalls

Erawan Falls is a multi-tiered waterfall inside a national park, with natural pools you can swim in. Arrive early before the crowds, wear comfortable shoes for the climb and bring a change of clothes. The little fish that nibble at your feet are well known, and a surprising experience. How many days and where to stay

The minimum: one intense day. Better one or two nights, to combine history and nature without a race. There are different accommodation options: in town, on the river and in greener areas. Here are a few hotels to consider.

It is worth deciding in advance whether your priority is history or nature, and then choosing the stay area accordingly.
