Bangkok

The historic royal palace complex, the tourist site most identified with Bangkok — modest dress required (shoulders and knees covered).

A stunning temple on the Chao Phraya River bank, decorated in porcelain — most impressive at sunset from the other side of the river.

Home to the giant reclining Buddha statue, and also a well-known center for learning traditional Thai massage.

One of the world's largest markets — thousands of stalls, open weekends only.

The lively Yaowarat street with street food, neon signs, and gold — liveliest in the evening.

The historic backpacker street — bars, street food, and an informal atmosphere.

A traditional Thai wooden house and art collection, the fascinating story of an American silk entrepreneur who disappeared in Thailand.

Cheap public transport that's also a tour — a pleasant way to see a large part of the city from the water.
