Why Phi Phi Looks Like a Completely Different Place
Koh Phi Phi is one of the scenery views most identified with Thailand — steep limestone cliffs growing straight out of turquoise water, with no gradual buildup. That's exactly what makes it so photographed, but also a place that can be flooded with tourists at certain hours of the day. Correct timing planning makes a huge difference in the experience.
The island actually consists of two parts — Koh Phi Phi Don (inhabited, with the village and lodging) and Koh Phi Phi Leh (small and uninhabited, home to famous Maya Bay) — and most of what's planned in a visit day is actually a boat trip between the two parts.
Maya Bay — the Star, with a Caveat
The bay that became famous thanks to the film 'The Beach' still looks stunning, but is sometimes subject to visit restrictions (limited hours, visitor quota) to let the coral reef recover from tourist damage — worth checking current status before planning your day exclusively around it.
The Viewpoint — the Sunrise Is Worth the Wake-Up
A short but steep climb (about 20-30 minutes) leads to a viewpoint with one of the most iconic views in Thailand — the island's two bays simultaneously, on either side. Those arriving at sunrise get it almost alone; those arriving at noon share it with dozens more.
Monkey Beach and Bamboo Island
Monkey Beach is accessible only by boat, with a free-roaming monkey population that approaches visitors — best not to bring visible plastic bags, the monkeys have learned to grab them. Bamboo Island, small and closer, offers clear water for snorkeling with less crowding than Maya Bay.
Day Trip or Overnight?
Most visitors arrive on a day trip from Phuket or Krabi, but staying overnight in the main village (Koh Phi Phi Don) lets you see the place in early morning and evening, after the tourist boats return to the mainland — a real difference in atmosphere, not just convenience. There are no motor vehicles on the island itself, everything is on foot or by boat.

A day trip (from Phuket or Krabi) is enough to see Maya Bay and maybe one more stop, but doesn't leave time for the viewpoint or Monkey Beach without rushing. A night or two of lodging lets you see everything at a reasonable pace, including sunrise at the viewpoint — worth the investment for those who care about this island in their route.
November-April is most recommended weather-wise and for water visibility for snorkeling — rainy season can limit certain boat trips due to rough seas.
