Southern Thailand Islands Route: Phuket, Phi Phi, and Koh Lanta
Three Andaman Sea Islands, Three Different Characters
Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, and Koh Lanta are all in the Andaman Sea a reasonable distance from each other (ferries/boats), but offer very different experiences โ full infrastructure, dramatic scenery, and quiet. Moving between the three clearly shows how 'Thailand islands' is actually too general a term, and why it's worth checking each island separately before booking.
Days 1-4: Phuket as a Base
The most accessible island (international airport), with the largest selection of hotels. Also a convenient departure point for day boat trips to nearby islands โ including the option to see Phang Nga Bay without an additional overnight stay.

Ferry from Phuket (about one to two hours). Maya Bay, the viewpoint, and dramatic turquoise water. Also possible as a day trip from Phuket, but staying overnight lets you see the place without the crush of tour boats that mostly arrive between 11:00-15:00.
The island is small enough to get around entirely on foot within the main village โ there are no motor vehicles on Koh Phi Phi itself, you arrive and leave only by boat.
Days 7-8: Koh Lanta
A much quieter, less developed island โ an old town with wooden houses, long beaches, and less mass tourism. The contrast from Phuket is felt immediately, and it's a good way to end the route on a calmer note, as a kind of 'reward' after two livelier destinations. Prices here are usually lower too.

Moving between the three islands requires coordinating boats/ferries โ not all run daily, worth checking schedules in advance and not assuming there's a connection every hour. In rainy season (May-October) some routes reduce to lower frequency.
Variation: Adding Koh Lipe at the End
For those with a few more days who want something more remote and quiet, Koh Lipe (in the south, close to the Malaysian border) is a natural addition after Koh Lanta โ but requires significant additional travel, and doesn't suit those who already feel the route is packed.
A simpler alternative: extend your stay in Koh Lanta itself by a day or two instead of adding a fourth destination โ the island offers enough variety (old town, different beaches) to justify extra time without moving again. This also reduces the number of boat transfers, which can be tiring in large numbers.
Boat trips: what to check beforehand
Boat trips from Phuket and Krabi are very popular, but quality varies. Check what is included in the price, how many people are on the boat, whether there are life jackets and working snorkel gear, and how much of the day is spent in the water. Smaller boats tend to arrive before the crowds. Read recent reviews and choose an established company. How to pack for three islands
You move between islands on small boats, so a soft, light bag beats a hard suitcase. Bring a waterproof pouch for your phone and documents, reef-friendly sunscreen, water shoes and spare swimwear. Some piers are simple docks without an elevator or convenient ramp, so check that hotels are close to the port. The packing list generator can give you a list by trip type.
Budget and transfer costs
Ferries and boats between the islands are a significant part of the budget, and in peak season prices may change. Book ahead where you can, and check whether the price includes a transfer to the port. Do not forget costs such as a large bag or a hotel pickup. Krabi as an extra stop
Between Phuket and Koh Lanta you can stop in Krabi, around Ao Nang and Railay, which offers cliff scenery and clear water. It is a convenient stop if you have a few extra days. In the dry season, between November and April, good island hotels fill up early, especially around holidays. Book at least the key nights ahead, and prefer free cancellation if offered. In the rainy season there is more flexibility and you can find cheaper prices, but some places are closed. Compare the Phuket hotels and read hotel or villa to understand what suits you.
What to do at a slower pace
If you want to skip the crowds, stay more nights on one island and take short outings. On Koh Lanta, for example, you can rent a kayak, walk around the old town or visit the national park. Where to go from there
At the end of the route you can return to Phuket for a flight, or continue to Krabi and leave from there. Check in advance which airport suits your onward flight, and leave a buffer before it.
