That's a big advantage for those who want flexibility and less advance planning.
Krabi โ Nature, Less Crowded
Krabi offers more dramatic scenery โ limestone cliffs, hidden bays, and less massive tourist development. It's a destination that suits those looking for nature and a bit more quiet, but with fewer entertainment/nightlife options compared to Phuket.
What a Typical Day Looks Like in Each Destination
In Phuket the day usually starts at the beach or the pool, continues with a small outing, such as Phuket Old Town with its colorful houses and markets, or a viewpoint over the bays, and ends with dinner at a seaside restaurant or one of the night markets. Getting between beaches usually requires a taxi, a scooter or a private driver, because the island is large and some areas are half an hour or more apart.
In Krabi the rhythm is tied to nature: longtail boats to beaches with no road access, rock climbing on the limestone cliffs, kayaks between the islands and snorkeling trips. Krabi tends to offer good value in the mid range, mainly in Ao Nang, but in peak season and in upscale Railay prices can approach Phuket's. The road between the two destinations usually takes about two and a half to three hours, and there are also ferries via the islands. Allow half a day for the trip and don't schedule it on a flight day. A common plan is four to five nights in each: open in Phuket, continue to Krabi and leave from there on a suitable flight. A ready-made route of this kind appears in the southern islands itinerary.
If you only have a week, it's better to choose one and invest in it, since travel between destinations eats into beach and rest time.
Who Suits Which Destination: Three Profiles
A family with children: Phuket is more convenient, since it has many beaches, hotel pools, attractions for kids and services on every corner.
