Railay is a peninsula surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs — one of the most photographed views in Thailand — but has no road access at all. You arrive only by longtail boat from Ao Nang (about 15-20 minutes). This means planning ahead for everything (including any medication/gear you need), but the scenic payoff is worth it for those seeking an extraordinary experience.

Krabi Town is the administrative city itself — less 'dream beach' and more a real Thai town, with a local night market and significantly lower prices. Good as a cheap lodging base if not everything depends on beach proximity, or as a stop before/after overland adventure trips (like waterfalls and caves).
How to Get to Krabi and What to Do on Arrival
Krabi airport is about an hour's drive from Ao Nang, and there are taxis, minibuses and transfer services. If you chose Railay, you'll need to continue to Ao Nang and board a longtail boat. Arrive at the pier with light luggage, because you board the boat from shallow water. On arrival check the sea conditions, since on stormy days boats sometimes don't go out. Day Trips and Activities From Each Base
From Krabi, boat trips go to the Four Islands, Hong Island and Pak Bia Island, and also to Koh Phi Phi. You can climb limestone walls at Railay, swim in the hidden lagoon and visit the Emerald Pool. Boat trips are common from Ao Nang, while from Krabi Town it's easier to reach waterfalls and caves. Food and Sunset in Each Area
Ao Nang has a large selection of restaurants, from street stalls to seafood restaurants on the beach. In Railay the selection is smaller and relatively pricey, because everything arrives by boat. In Krabi Town you'll find a night market with cheap local food and an authentic atmosphere. An evening on Railay West beach toward sunset is considered one of the loveliest moments in the area.
