Koh Lipe: "The Maldives of Thailand" — How to Get There and When to Visit?
The Bluest Island, and the Least Accessible
Koh Lipe earned the nickname 'the Maldives of Thailand' thanks to its clear water and white sand — and unlike most well-known Thailand islands, it's not accessible by direct flight or a short ferry from the mainland. That distance is exactly why it stays less mass-touristy than Phuket or Koh Samui.
How to Actually Get There
There's no airport on the island itself. The most common route: fly to Hat Yai (in southern Thailand) and from there an overland drive + a relatively long ferry (a few hours total). Second option: fly to Langkawi in Malaysia and from there a shorter ferry to the border — sometimes actually faster, depending on where you're flying from.
Because of the long chain of connections, worth planning a 'buffer' day before and after visiting Koh Lipe — don't plan a connecting flight too close to the same day you arrive or leave.
When to Visit
November through April is the recommended dry season. Important to know: because of the distance and limited accessibility, a significant part of the tourist infrastructure (restaurants, small hotels) simply closes entirely in rainy season (May-October) — unlike bigger destinations that stay partially open. If planning a visit in this season, must confirm in advance that your chosen hotel is open.
What There Is to Do There
Sunrise Beach (east) and Sunset Beach (west) — the names speak for themselves. Walking Street is the social center in the evening. The main activity beyond the beach is snorkeling/diving to nearby islands within the marine park — Koh Adang and Koh Rawi — with some of the clearest water in the area.
Is It Worth the Effort
The honest answer: depends how much time you have. For those with only a week to ten days in Thailand, Koh Lipe will probably take too large a chunk of time relative to the payoff — there are more accessible islands with water almost as beautiful. For those with two weeks or more, or who've already seen the central destinations and finished there, Koh Lipe offers something most other islands no longer do — a genuine sense of remoteness and fewer crowds.
The island itself is very small and walkable — no need for a rental car or scooter at all, unlike most other destinations on this list.
Hotels and Lodging Experience
Because of relatively high demand for the island's size, lodging prices in Koh Lipe tend to be higher than you'd expect for such a remote destination — competition is limited, and that's reflected in the price. You can still find reasonable options, but don't expect 'cheap remote island' prices — sometimes the opposite.
Most lodging is concentrated near Sunrise Beach or Walking Street, within walking distance of the beach and central restaurants — convenience that somewhat compensates for the relatively high lodging prices.

Around Koh Lipe there are small islands with reefs and clear water, and many people choose a day boat trip. The trip usually includes several snorkeling stops and some deserted beaches. Arriving through the south: a combined route
As mentioned, getting to Lipe is long, so it is worth combining it with a nearby destination in the south. What to pack for a remote island
On a small, remote island it is worth bringing personal medication and basic remedies, a power bank, sunscreen and a hat. Some shops on the island are small with limited choice. Sunrise Beach suits those who like open sea and relative quiet, Sunset Beach is quiet and less crowded, and Pattaya Beach is the most active, next to the walking street. Food on Lipe is varied, from fresh fish to pizza and Thai dishes. The walking street is full of small restaurants, bars and shops. The island is less noisy than big islands, and the nightlife is pleasant and not crowded. Book a table ahead on busy evenings, and check that the restaurant is open in your season. As on any remote island, prices may be slightly higher than on the mainland.
Fitting it into a long trip
Lipe suits as a quiet ending to a long trip in the south. You can combine it after Koh Lanta or Krabi, and continue from there back home.
