Chiang Rai in 2 Days: White Temple, Black House and More
Why not skip Chiang Rai
Most travellers in the north stay in Chiang Mai. But a few hours further north sits a quieter city with three places that are hard to forget, each looking like a temple or house born from a very different imagination.
The city itself is small and easy, ideal for one or two nights. For more temple ideas, browse our must-see temples guide, but Chiang Rai offers something different from the traditional ones.
The White Temple, the Blue Temple and the Black House
The White Temple, Wat Rong Khun, is a contemporary work by the artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, with mirrored decoration and unexpected sculptures. It is usually quieter early in the morning, so try to arrive early. Dress modestly.
The Blue Temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten, is smaller, with a vivid blue interior. The Black House, Baan Dam, is a complex of dark wooden buildings with a collection of objects, created by the artist Thawan Duchanee. All three are very different from each other.
Singha Park, night markets and food
Singha Park is a large farm owned by the well-known beer company, with tea fields, animals and green views. It makes for a relaxed afternoon, especially with children, and you do not need to drink to enjoy it.
In the evening, wander the city's night markets. On Saturdays there is usually a larger walking street, but check days and hours before you plan around it. You can try northern dishes like khao soi and sample snacks. More in our must-try dishes guide.
Getting there from Chiang Mai
The usual way is by bus or minivan, taking roughly three to four hours. You can also hire a driver for the day, which is handy if you want several sights outside town. Domestic flights exist too, so check availability.
A same-day return is long but possible. I would suggest at least one night so you are not rushing. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Chiang Rai, here are some options.
