Chiang Rai is Thailand's northernmost city, known mainly for the impressive White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and Blue Temple, and its proximity to the 'Golden Triangle' — the point where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar's borders meet.

Best time to visit

November–February (cool and pleasant). March–April is known for agricultural burning smoke, like in Chiang Mai.

Direct flight from Bangkok, or overland drive from Chiang Mai (about 3 hours).

White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) המקדש הלבן

A stunning contemporary art piece — a glittering white-silver temple with surrealist details, designed by a living local artist.

Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) המקדש הכחול

An intensely blue-and-gold temple, less known than the White Temple but no less impressive.

Baan Dam Museum (Black House) בית השחור

A special, somewhat macabre art complex by another local artist — a collection of dark structures and animal bones.

Golden Triangle המשולש הזהב

The point where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar's borders meet along the Mekong River — historically an opium production center.

Doi Mae Salong דוי מאה סלונג

A mountain village with tea plantations, founded by descendants of Kuomintang soldiers — a completely different atmosphere, like rural China.

Singha Park פארק סינגה

A huge tea plantation and farm park with open views, you can tour by cable car or bicycle.

Practical tips

•The White and Blue Temples are relatively close to each other and can be combined in one day with a stop or two more.
•The Golden Triangle is accessible on a day trip from the city, about an hour's drive — usually including a stop at hill tribe villages along the way.
•Like in Chiang Mai, March-April are known for burning smoke — a less recommended season if sensitive.
