A Two-Week Thailand Route — the Perfect Plan for First-Time Travelers
Why Two Weeks Is Exactly the Right Time for a First Trip
Two weeks is enough to see three destinations of different character without rushing too much — a big city, a culture/mountain area, and a beach island. It's also enough time so that internal travel (flight or train) doesn't swallow too large a share of the vacation, unlike a shorter route where every travel day 'costs' relatively a lot of the total time.
This classic route (Bangkok → Chiang Mai → Phuket) became popular for a reason — it gives a real taste of three different 'types of Thailand': a vibrant Asian city, mountain culture and nature, and a classic tropical beach. Whoever finishes these two weeks already knows which direction to go deeper on their next trip.
Days 1-4: Bangkok
Landing, recovering from the flight on day one, then 2-3 full days for the city — the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, Chatuchak Market (if timed for a weekend), and the Chinatown district in the evening. Bangkok is also the best place to get used to the heat and food before continuing, and it's not worth skipping this stage even if you feel like jumping straight to the beach.
Recommended to base your lodging in the Sukhumvit or Silom area — close to the light rail, and allows convenient movement between historic sites and modern shopping areas without wasting hours in traffic.

A short domestic flight (about an hour) to the north. Wat Doi Suthep, the old city, and if there's time — a full day at an ethical elephant park (one focused on observation and care, not riding). Chiang Mai is also significantly cooler than Bangkok, pleasant for variety after a few days in a scorching city.
If arriving in the right season (November-February), worth planning one evening around the Sunday Walking Street — one of the north's most attractive markets, open only once a week.

Another flight (usually with a stop in Bangkok) to the beach part of the trip. Six days is enough for both resting on the beach and one day boat trip to nearby islands (Phang Nga or Phi Phi). See our Phuket areas guide to choose the right lodging base — Patong for nightlife, Kata/Karon for a more family atmosphere.
Worth planning the last day intentionally light — last-minute shopping, a Thai massage, and a beachfront dinner — not another additional attraction pushing your departure.

Two domestic flight legs (Bangkok↔Chiang Mai↔Phuket) — worth booking them in advance, not waiting for availability. Don't plan more than two destination transfers in two weeks — three already feels rushed. If you prefer islands over mountains, you can swap Chiang Mai for a second beach destination (like Krabi) instead.
Time budget: about 4 hours on average are 'lost' with each transfer between destinations (travel to the airport, flight, travel from the airport) — that's part of the overall accounting, not just the vacation days themselves.
