Thailand Nightlife Beyond Full Moon Parties: How to Build a Good Evening
Thai nights are bigger than any party
Ask most people about nightlife in Thailand and they picture a bucket of cocktails on a beach. In reality, the night here can be a rooftop bar above the city, a night market with a hundred smells, live music, a sports show or a quiet cruise on the river.
This guide is for people who want a good evening, not an all-nighter. And if you do want to see a beach party, we have a full moon party guide.
Rooftop bars and city views
Bangkok is famous for rooftop bars on skyscrapers, and they give a striking view of the city at night. Many have a dress code, for example no flip-flops or shorts, so check beforehand. Prices are usually above the city average, so order one drink and savor it.
The best time is around sunset, when the light is lovely and it is less crowded. If you want to stay in the heart of the city, browse the hotels in Bangkok within a short ride of the nightlife areas.

A night market is dinner, shopping and a stroll in one, and it works for nearly everyone. We cover them in our Bangkok night markets guide. Phuket and other towns usually have night markets of their own, worth a short walk even if you buy nothing.
Live music turns up in small bars, beachfront restaurants and entertainment districts. You do not need a specific address: follow the sound. In Phuket the mood changes from area to area, from the loud party street to quieter beaches.
Muay Thai, night cruises and other ideas
A Muay Thai show is an interesting way to see the national sport. There are professional events in stadiums and more tourist-oriented evenings, so find out what you are buying before you pay. Read more in our Muay Thai guide.
An evening cruise on a river or the sea gives you another view of a city: lights, a light breeze and time to sit. Many cruises include dinner, so compare what is included. It suits couples and families alike.
A quiet evening, and basic safety
You do not have to go out. A massage, a slow dinner, a balcony facing the sea or a film at the hotel are all fine ways to end a day. There is no need to feel you are missing out.
Keep a few simple rules every evening: watch your drink and never leave it unattended, check the bill before paying, agree on a price before you start, and head home with Grab or a metered taxi. More on common pitfalls in our guide to avoiding scams.
The short version: building an evening
Pick one kind of evening: a view, food, music, sport or quiet. Start early, carry small cash, and decide in advance how you will get back to your accommodation.
