Why Thailand Is Considered an Open Destination in the Region
Thailand is known as one of Asia's most tolerant destinations toward the LGBTQ+ community, with a especially visible public presence in Bangkok and Phuket — festivals, bars, and dedicated social spaces. This doesn't mean full legal equality (as of now there's no same-sex marriage recognized identically to straight marriage), but in terms of everyday street atmosphere, it's very different from many neighboring countries.
Especially Friendly Areas
Bangkok's Silom district (especially Soi 4) is known as the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife center. In Phuket, Patong offers a similar scene on a smaller scale. Outside these areas, Thailand overall tends to be quiet and non-intrusive on the topic, not hostile.
What About Hotels
Most international hotel chains and mid-range hotels and up make no distinction whatsoever when booking a double room — no need to hide or explain anything at booking. At smaller, more traditional places, the question usually just doesn't come up at all.
Cultural Sensitivity Worth Knowing
Despite the open atmosphere, public physical displays of affection (of any orientation) are less accepted in Thailand's more conservative culture outside the known entertainment areas — not due to specific hostility, but a general norm of public modesty that applies to everyone.
Events and Festivals
Bangkok hosts Pride annually (usually in November), with a parade and related events — if the dates suit your trip, worth checking the specific schedule in advance since it changes year to year.
