Thailand During the Holidays (September-October): Where's the Weather Best?
Not the Ideal Season, but Not Disastrous
September-October is in the middle of rainy season across most of Thailand — not the time recommended as a first choice, but also not a reason to cancel a trip entirely if these are the only available dates.
What to Actually Expect
More frequent rain than July-August in most areas, including Bangkok and the north. The rain usually comes in bursts (an intense hour or two, then it clears), not a continuous full day — you can plan around this, especially with flexible activities.
Where It's Actually Worth It During This Period
The Gulf islands (Koh Samui especially) are still relatively reasonable in September, with their real rainy season starting more toward October-November. This is one reason Koh Samui is considered a relatively flexible destination year-round.

Fewer tourists, lower lodging prices, and especially green, fresh scenery (the rain 'feeds' the nature). Those not sensitive to unpredictable weather can find good value here that doesn't exist in peak season.
Low-Demand Season — an Advantage for the Flexible
Precisely because this isn't the recommended season, flight and hotel prices tend to be significantly lower than peak season. Those who don't mind the risk of a few rainy days can find good deals here, including at high-level hotels much more expensive in regular season.
Events and Festivals During This Period
September-October also sometimes includes the Vegetarian Festival in Phuket and the south — a colorful cultural-religious event, even if not necessarily comfortable weather-wise to watch it.
Alternative Route for This Period
Those whose dates fall exactly in this season can consider combining the north (Chiang Mai) with Koh Samui instead of Phuket — the north is less affected by rainy season at the same intensity, and Koh Samui is still reasonable in September. Such a combination gives a significantly drier route than choosing Phuket/Krabi for this period.
The Tishrei Holidays as Timing
September-October sometimes overlaps with the Tishrei holidays — a period many Israelis use for vacation. If that's the main consideration, worth planning around the advantages (fewer tourists, lower prices) and not just being disappointed by the less-than-perfect weather. Also worth remembering flights during this period can be busy because of that same holiday overlap, so early booking is still relevant.
