Why Koh Tao and Not Somewhere Else
Koh Tao is one of the cheapest places in the world to get an Open Water diving certification thanks to high competition among dozens of diving schools on a relatively small island โ the price usually includes all diving gear, study materials, and several open-water dives as part of the course.
Beyond the price, the island is surrounded by relatively shallow coral reefs close to shore, so even completely new divers reach open water within a day or two of starting the course, not just the pool.
Choosing a Diving School
All serious schools on the island are certified through one of the international certification organizations (PADI or SSI are the most common) โ worth making sure the certification is indeed through one of these organizations, not just an internal school certificate that won't be recognized elsewhere in the world.
The instructor-to-student ratio directly affects the attention you'll get โ worth asking in advance how many students will be in your group, not just the price. Small groups (2-4 students per instructor) are usually better for beginners.
Open Water โ the Beginner Course
The standard course length is 3-4 days: a day of theoretical study and pool practice, followed by 2-3 days of supervised open-water dives. At the end you receive an international certification valid for diving up to 18 meters deep anywhere in the world, without an instructor.
No prior experience or exceptional physical fitness needed โ the main requirement is basic swimming ability and good health (there's a standard medical questionnaire before registration).
For Certified Divers โ Where to Continue
Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock are the best-known diving sites around Koh Tao for experienced divers โ medium depth, good visibility most months of the year, and a relatively good chance of encountering whale sharks in the right season, mainly between March-May and October-November.
Those wanting to go deeper can continue straight to the Advanced Open Water course (adds specializations in deep diving, navigation, and night diving) โ many divers do this right after Open Water in the same visit, since they're already there with gear and instructors.
When to Plan Your Visit
Water visibility is usually best between March and May, and again between September and November. October-November can be stormier due to monsoon season in the Gulf of Thailand โ worth checking a specific forecast before setting dates around diving.
After Open Water: Courses and Specialties
Those who enjoy diving can continue to further courses, such as Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver and specialty courses in underwater photography or deep diving. There are also freediving courses, without air tanks. Each such course requires time and investment, so plan in advance how many days you have.
Safety, Insurance and Flying After a Dive
After diving you must not board a plane right away, because the pressure change can cause decompression sickness. The common recommendation is to wait at least 18 to 24 hours, so check the dive school's recommendation and keep a gap between your last dive and your flight. Check that your travel insurance covers diving, and up to which depth. And dive only when you're healthy, and don't drink alcohol before diving.
What Else Is on the Island Besides Diving
Even those who don't dive will find things to do: snorkeling in bays such as Mango Bay and Shark Bay, walks to viewpoints, and a day cruise to Koh Nang Yuan, a small island with a famous beach that charges an entrance fee. The beaches on the island are small but beautiful, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Those who come at the end of a course can celebrate in the evening at one of the beach bars.

You reach Koh Tao by ferry from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or the mainland, and ferry details are in ferries and speedboats. The main accommodation areas are Sairee, the social and nightlife area, and Chalok Baan Kao, which is calmer. How to Choose a Dive School
Koh Tao has dozens of schools, and an especially low price isn't always a good sign. Check that the instructors are certified, the equipment is maintained, and the group size is reasonable. Read recent reviews, and ask how many divers there are per instructor. Ask to see the safety measures, such as emergency oxygen. If you're a beginner, don't be shy to say you're nervous, and choose a pace that suits you. And in the end you don't have to finish at the first school you chose.
Also check what the course price includes: accommodation, equipment, certificate and extra dives. Some schools offer discounted lodging for students, and some add costs later, so it's worth asking in advance.
