Plugs, Chargers and Electronics in Thailand: What to Pack

3 min readFrom the THAI TROPIC blog

First things first: voltage and plugs

The good news: Thailand's mains is 230 volts at 50 hertz, similar to Israel, so most phone and laptop chargers work. Still, check the label on your charger, which usually lists a voltage range.

Thai sockets accept several plug types, and many are combination sockets. An Israeli two-pin plug with slim pins usually fits, but not everywhere, so test it rather than assume.

The Israeli three-pin plug

An Israeli type H plug with three pins will not necessarily fit Thai sockets. In that case you need an adapter. Do not force a plug into a socket, as it can damage both.

A small universal adapter is the best investment. Take one or two, and consider a power strip with several sockets if you travel as a group. Add this gear to your packing list.

Power banks and flight rules

Power banks are generally allowed only in carry-on, not checked luggage, but every airline has its own rules on capacity and number. Check the airline's website before you fly.

Do not leave charging devices unattended, especially overnight on bedding. If you need help planning, the packing list generator can help.

Internet: SIM or eSIM

Before you fly, decide how you will stay connected. An eSIM is convenient because you can install it in advance, while a physical SIM can be bought at the airport. All the options are covered in our SIM card and internet guide.

Download offline maps and key apps in advance. You will find a recommended list in our apps guide.

Heat, water and your electronics

Your phone can overheat in strong sun, especially while navigating and filming. Keep it out of direct sunlight, remove the case when it is hot, and do not leave it on a scooter seat or in a hot car. More on the heat in our heat and sun protection guide.

A waterproof pouch is handy for the beach, boats and rainy days. Test it before use, and even though it protects, do not rely on it for diving.

The short version: what to pack

A universal adapter, suitable chargers, a power bank in your carry-on, spare cables and a waterproof pouch. Download maps and choose an internet solution in advance.

Check your airline's current rules. And charge your phone before landing, so you arrive ready to go.
