Apps to Download Before You Land in Thailand
Your phone is your guide, wallet and interpreter
In Thailand almost everything is quicker when you have a few good apps on your screen. You do not need forty; a handful downloaded before the flight and tested will do.
This list focuses on what actually helps: transport, navigation, language, money, weather and bookings. Each solves a different problem, and together they save a lot of confusion.
Transport and navigation
Grab and Bolt are ride-hailing apps that save you haggling with drivers and show the price upfront. In some cities they work better than in others, so check local availability.
Google Maps is the main navigation tool, public transport included. Download an offline map of your area before you head out, so you can navigate even when the internet is slow or there is no signal.
Language and communication
Google Translate in camera mode translates menus and signs almost in real time. The translation is not perfect, but it is enough to understand what you are ordering. Also download the Thai language pack for offline use.
Line is the popular chat app in Thailand, and many local businesses use it. If you need to coordinate with a host or driver, that may be the way. For keeping in touch with home, stick with WhatsApp.
Money and prices
A travel money app such as Wise lets you track spending and pay without high conversion fees, but terms change, so check them beforehand. Withdrawal and exchange fees have their own dedicated guide.
A simple currency converter prevents confusion between baht and shekels, especially when haggling at a market or checking a menu.
Weather, accommodation and staying connected
A weather app with rain radar helps you time outings in the rainy season. It is especially useful for the sea and for outdoor trips.
Agoda is one of the popular booking platforms in the region and a partner of this site, and you can of course compare on other platforms too. For connectivity, our SIM and eSIM guide explains the options.
Summary: what to download tonight
Download an offline map, a translation app, a ride-hailing app, a weather app and one payments app. Check that everything opens and works.
Then search for accommodation without pressure. It is better to be ready before you land.
