A Guide for the Kosher-Keeping Traveler in Thailand: Chabad Houses and Kosher Restaurants

6 min readFrom the THAI TROPIC blog

More Accessible Than Many Think

Thailand is one of the destinations with the most organized Jewish-Israeli presence outside Israel, thanks to a long-established Chabad house network. Those who keep kosher don't need to give up a trip to Thailand — you just need to know how to plan around it.

The Chabad House Network

The first Chabad house in Thailand opened in Bangkok in 1993, led by Rabbi Yosef-Chaim Kantor. Today there are 6 main Chabad houses for travelers: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Phuket, Pai, and Koh Phangan. Each Chabad house usually includes a kosher restaurant, a synagogue, and practical assistance for Israeli travelers.

On weekdays you can arrive without prior registration; for Shabbats and holidays it's highly recommended to register in advance — Shabbat meals at the larger Chabad houses (like Chiang Mai and Bangkok) sometimes include hundreds of participants.

What a Chabad House Actually Offers

Kosher food (a full restaurant, not just snacks), organized prayers, a free phone line to Israel at some locations, internet, and sometimes also a basic medicine cabinet and emergency assistance for travelers. Some houses also include a mikveh.

Practical Planning Tip

If your route includes Shabbat, worth planning to be at a destination with a Chabad house on that day (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Phuket, Pai, or Koh Phangan) and registering in advance. At destinations without a permanent Chabad house, you can bring pre-packaged kosher food or rely on fresh vegetables/fruit and vegetarian cuisine, which is usually easier to keep kosher than meat.

Beyond Chabad Houses

In big cities you can also find kosher products in international supermarkets, and vegetarian/fish meals (usually easier to keep at basic kashrut level) are available almost everywhere thanks to Thai cuisine's rich use of vegetables.

Another Tip Before the Trip

Worth contacting the relevant Chabad house a few days ahead via phone or their social media, especially around holidays — they're usually available and happy to help with planning, even if you're not yet sure of exact dates.

Packaged Kosher Food for Areas Without a Chabad House

For smaller destinations (like Lampang or Phitsanulok), you can bring canned goods and packaged kosher food from Israel or from the Chabad house shop in Bangkok before continuing to more remote places.
