Pattaya for Families and Couples: What the Reputation Misses
Reputation versus reality
Pattaya has a reputation as a loud nightlife city, and in parts of it that is true. But it is also a large seaside city close to Bangkok, with plenty of hotels, family attractions and beaches that differ a lot from one another. Everything depends on where you choose to sleep.
The fairest approach is neither to ignore the reputation nor to let it decide everything. Get to know the areas, choose well and know what to skip. For comparison, read our Bangkok day trips guide.
The areas: where to sleep
Jomtien is a long, quieter stretch of beach, suited to families and anyone wanting calm. Wong Amat and Naklua in the north are considered calmer and more upscale, with large resorts. Pratumnak is a hill between the city and Jomtien, relatively quiet.
The famous nightlife street and the central area are noisy and less suitable for families with children. If you want to be close to everything but sleep quietly, the side areas will do. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Pattaya, here are some options.

Koh Larn is a nearby island reached by boat and suits a beach day. It is busy on weekends, so a weekday is better. The Sanctuary of Truth is an impressive, enormous wooden building that is still being built and carved. Nong Nooch is a large tropical garden with shows and views.
All of these work for families too. Check opening hours and tickets in advance. You can combine them into a full day, but do not try to do everything in one.
What to skip and how to stay careful
At the central city beach many people prefer not to swim, so choose Jomtien or Koh Larn for swimming instead. Avoid spontaneous street offers, especially jet-ski rentals, and use known providers.
Read the common scams guide and the tourist traps guide, and agree a price before any service.
Summary: what to do next
Pattaya suits a short, convenient holiday if you pick the right area and plan a few attractions. If you want a calmer island, look at Koh Samet.
