Lampang is a small city, less known to foreign tourists, but retains a traditional Thai character and calmer pace than nearby Chiang Mai. Known for the traditional horse-drawn carriages still used in the city.

Wat Phra That Lampang Luang וואט פרה טאט לאמפאנג לואנג

One of the most important and oldest temples in northern Thailand (from the 13th century), in Lanna style with a golden chedi and impressive teak construction.

Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao וואט פרה קאו דון טאו

Lampang's most revered temple, the historic home of the Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok) — a blend of Lanna, Burmese, and Shan architecture.

Wat Sri Rong Muang וואט סרי רונג מואנג

A 20th-century Burmese-style temple, with a decorated teak hall and glass mosaics — clearly different from other northern temples.

Lampang is the only city in Thailand that retains horse-drawn carriages as traditional transport — a short tour of the old town.

A government center focused on elephant rehabilitation and welfare, including an elephant hospital — less commercial than similar places.

Chae Son National Park פארק צ'אה סון

A national park with hot springs and waterfalls, about an hour outside the city.

Practical tips

•Most sites are spread outside the city center — a rental car or private driver for the day is better than public transport.
•Lampang is convenient as a waypoint on the way to Chiang Rai or Pai — less worthwhile as a standalone destination for a first trip.
•There are far fewer foreign tourists here than in Chiang Mai — worth knowing a few basic Thai words, less English spoken.
