Tropical Fruits in Thailand: a Guide to Special Fruits

A Variety That Doesn't Exist in Israel

One of the simple pleasures of a Thailand trip is access to fresh tropical fruits in a variety hard to find in Israel — some familiar, some not at all.

Durian — 'King of Fruits', Love It or Hate It

A strong, distinctive smell (some describe it as unpleasant) but rich, creamy taste for fans. Many hotels ban it from rooms because of the smell — worth knowing before buying.

Mangosteen, Rambutan, and Longan

Mangosteen — a hard purple peel with sweet-tart white flesh inside, sometimes considered the most balanced fruit for durian lovers and non-lovers alike. Rambutan — similar to lychee but with external 'hair'. Longan — small and sweet, similar to lychee in taste.

How to Tell Ripeness and Where to Buy

Local markets and street fruit stalls are the best place — fresh, cheap, and the seller will usually happily help choose a ripe fruit if asked. Supermarkets also sell cut, ready-to-eat fruit, convenient for busy touring days.

Seasonality — Not All Fruits Are Available Year-Round

Durian and mangosteen are at their seasonal peak roughly April-June; the best mango is February-May. Those arriving in the wrong season will still find fruits, but not necessarily at peak quality — worth checking specific seasonality if a particular fruit matters to you.

More Fruits Worth Knowing

Pomelo (a large citrus, sweeter than grapefruit), salak ('snake fruit', scaly peel), and pitaya (dragon fruit, pink with black dots) — all common in markets and interesting to try, even if less known than durian and mango.

Buying Tip

Better to buy fruit at a local market than a tourist supermarket — fresher, cheaper, and the seller will usually happily help choose a ripe fruit if you just point and smile, even without a shared language.

Fruits Served as Dessert

Beyond classic mango sticky rice, fresh cut fruit (especially pineapple and watermelon) is a common dessert at most Thai restaurants, usually free or nearly free at the end of a meal — a pleasant way to end a heavy meal.

Fresh Fruit Juices

Alongside the fruits themselves, freshly squeezed juices (not concentrate) are sold on every corner — cold coconut, watermelon, mango, and various mixes. Cheap, fresh, and a pleasant way to cool down between sites on a hot day.

When to Go to the Market, Not the Supermarket

An early-morning open market is the best time for the freshest fruit — goods arrive before sunrise and sell fast. Supermarkets are convenient but the fruit there is usually less fresh and more expensive for the same quality.
